I have a friend who is a locksmith. All he does is get the VIN and drive to the dealer and get the new key. Then he charges for his time plus the key. his time is much more than $ 5…they don’t leave the house for less than $ 50…would you.

You may have more problems than you are aware of. I was under the impression that the 2000 Explorer had PATS (Passive Anti-Theft Systems) on them that require special keys that have transponders in them that have to be programed in order for them to work. If you have both keys it isn’t much trouble to program an extra key. If you have only 1 key it has to be done at the dealership and cost about $ 100. If you have no keys, I don’t know the procedure but it can’t be easy or inexpensive. I hope I’m wrong about your vehicle having the PATS, but you might want to check for sure. Check the following web site: http://www.1-800-pdq-keys.com/news.htm …good Luck…

If you have the PATS System, then it takes a Locksmith about 45 minutes to cut the keys and program them. Always get 2 then from there on you can program more yourself.

    For this we charge 139.95.
